A Breakthrough in car battery drive range

CATL unveiled a battery with 1000 Km drive range per charge to start production in 2023. According to the announcement, the battery has a 255 Wh/Kg. It provides 13% more drive range than the new Tesla battery, a major CATL client.

Battery drive range in EVs has slowed down in the last years. According to the IEA Electric Vehicle Outlook 2022, released this month (June 2022), the battery drive range increased by 12% annually from 2015–2019. However, it stagnated from 2019 to 2020, increasing slightly to 3.5% in 2021, resulting in a 9% annual rate increase from 2015 to 2021.

CATL’s new Qilin battery will provide ~35% more energy density than the expected average for 2023 (see figure 1).

It suggests that Li-ion batteries have not reached technological maturity. Also, there is a psychological effect: EV cars drive ranges are quickly surpassing those of Internal Combustion Engines cars
